RON HORNADAY, KHI #33 DOVER RACE REPORT

Hornaday Finishes 3rd Despite Late-Race Engine Issue

DOVER, Del. ( June 2, 2008 ) – Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Camping World Chevrolet Silverado team came home with a solid third-place finish, despite a broken rocker arm in the engine, in the AAA Insurance 200 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on Friday, May 30.

“It’s a good points day for us, we really needed a run like that after the past couple of weeks,” Hornaday said. “My hat’s off to (crew chief) Rick Ren and these guys on the Camping World team. I want to thank Kevin and DeLana Harvick , Camping World, Chevrolet, VFW and everyone that is a part of this program. Mark Smith (engine builder) gives us really good motors and I’m curious to see what happened because his motors never have problems like that.”

Starting from the fifth position, Hornaday patiently gained positions one-by-one. He raced his way into the second position by lap 46 and was gaining ground on leader Kyle Busch when the second caution of the race came out on lap 51. Crew chief Rick Ren called Hornaday down pit road for their first scheduled pit stop of the day to take four tires and fuel.

On lap 94, Hornaday was running in the second spot behind Busch when Busch’s transmission let go and brought the caution out. A good pit stop by the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado team kept Hornaday in the lead as he exited pit road. He led the next 36 laps.

Ren knew that Hornaday would need one more set of tires to finish the race. When the caution came out for the seventh time on lap 130 for oil on the track, Ren made the decision to call Hornaday to the pits for four tires and fuel. Because some trucks stayed out on the track and others opted to take only two tires instead of four, Hornaday restarted from the sixth position on lap 134 and climbed to the second position before the eighth and final caution of the day came out on lap 170 when Todd Bodine was involved in accident in turn three.

The race restarted on lap 178 with Hornaday chasing the leader and eventual winner Scott Speed. One lap later, Hornaday’s motor lost a cylinder as he came out of turn two. Jack Sprague, his KHI teammate was able to make the pass for the second spot but Hornaday was still able to run competitive lap times and hold off a charging Travis Kvapil for a third-place finish.

Race Chatter:
During the caution period between laps 65 and 68, Hornaday received some words of encouragement from KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick .

Harvick: “Ron, you’re doing a great job out there.”

Hornaday: “Thanks boss. I’m really trying to catch those two guys in front of me.”

Harvick: “After seven or eight laps, everybody is running the same lap times. Just keep it up and we’ll get you out front.”

Hornaday: “10-4”
