LEBANON,
Tenn. (August 11, 2008)
– Ron Hornaday and the Kevin
Harvick Inc. (KHI) No. 33 VFW Chevrolet Silverado team picked up their eighth
top-five finish of the season on Saturday night, finishing fifth in the Toyota
Tundra 200 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway.
"At the start of the race I
thought we were pretty darn good,” Hornaday said. “We got up from 14th all the
way into the top five. I couldn't even tell Rick Ren (crew chief) what to do
with it. One lap it would be tight and then the next lap it would be loose. Rick
made an awesome call, staying out on tires. That's what this VFW crew is all
about. When you're down and come out with a top five, we'll take that. We were
a 20th-place truck and finished fifth. That says a lot for our team.”
When the green flag flew on
the first of the 200 laps, Hornaday quickly charged into the top five by lap 10.
He continued in the fifth position before making his first scheduled pit stop on
lap 38 after the caution came out for debris on the race track. Hornaday brought
the No. 33 VFW Chevrolet Silverado down pit road for four tires and fuel. A good
stop by crew got Hornaday back out in the fifth position for the restart on lap
41.
Hornaday took the fourth spot
on the restart and radioed to the crew on lap 57 that the truck was fighting a
loose condition. Ren instructed Hornaday to turn his brake blowers on to help
tighten the truck’s handling. When the caution came out on lap 74 after a
multi-truck accident in turn two, Hornaday radioed back to the crew to let them
know the truck’s handling improved with the blowers on. Ren decided to call
Hornaday down pit road for the second scheduled pit stop of the race for four
tires and fuel. Hornaday restarted 11th on lap 78.
With Hornaday running in the
ninth position, the caution came out on lap 115 for debris on the race track.
Knowing other competitors were having trouble with newer tires, Ren made the
decision for Hornaday to come down pit road for fuel only, getting Hornaday out
in front of the field. Hornaday led a lap while under caution, gaining five
valuable championship bonus points, before leading the field to the restart on
lap 118.
Erik Darnell was able to get a
run on Hornaday after the restart, and the No. 33 VFW Chevrolet Silverado
settled into the second position. Fighting loose and tight conditions over the
final 20 laps, Hornaday battled with Johnny Benson, Todd Bodine and KHI teammate
Jack Sprague for positions before settling into the fifth spot where he took the
checkered flag.
After Saturday night’s
top-five finish, Hornaday is in second place in the NASCAR Truck Series
championship point standings, only 45 points behind leader Johnny Benson.
