TALLADEGA, Ala. ( October 6,
2008 )
– Ron Hornaday and the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI)
No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado team overcame an early pit road
speeding penalty to a finish second and take over the NASCAR Truck Series points
lead Saturday in the Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn Dixie at Talladega (Ala.)
Superspeedway. It was Hornaday’s 12th top-five finish of the season and his
fourth in a row.
“We ran well all day,” Hornaday said. “We’ll
take it. Coming out here and finishing second, that is just unbelievable. This
is what this team is all about. They built a brand-new truck and to come here
and do this is a lot of fun. I want to thank Kevin and DeLana Harvick , Rick Ren
(crew chief) and everybody on this Camping World Chevrolet team. It was just
awesome.”
Hornaday started the race from the seventh
position and drove to fourth place before he completed the first lap, where he
continued to run until the caution came out on lap 20 for debris on the race
track. Ren called Hornaday down pit road on lap 21 to take right-side tires and
fuel. As Hornaday left pit road, NASCAR officials made the call that he was too
fast coming off pit road, meaning he would have to come back down pit road to
serve a pass-through penalty. Ren decided to take advantage of the situation and
top off the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado with fuel. Hornaday
restarted on lap 23 from the 26th position.
By lap 30, Hornaday had gained nine spots and
was running in the second spot by lap 50 as the field began cycling through
green-flag pit stops. Ren called Hornaday down pit road under green on lap 53 to
take right-side tires and fuel. Hornaday returned to the track and was running
in the 12th spot when the caution came out on lap 68 after an accident in turn
four involving Hornaday’s KHI teammate Jack Sprague. Ren made the call for
Hornaday to come down pit road on lap 69 for what would be their last pit stop
of the day for left-side tires and fuel. Hornaday restarted from the 11th spot
on lap 77 and was running third when the fourth and final caution of the race
came out on lap 85 for a multi-truck accident in turn four. Hornaday restarted
from the third position on lap 88.
With two laps to go, Hornaday was in the sixth
position behind Todd Bodine in the inside lane. On the final lap, Bodine made a
move to the outside lane and passed Kyle Busch for the lead. Hornaday tucked in
behind Bodine and crossed the finish line to take the second spot ahead of Busch
and Colin Braun.
Hornaday now holds a 39-point lead over Johnny
Benson in the Truck Series point standings. There are five races remaining in
the 2008 Truck Series season with the next race on October 18 at Martinsville (
Va. ) Speedway .
