AVONDALE,
Ariz. (November 10, 2008)
– Ron Hornaday and the Kevin
Harvick Inc. (KHI) No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW)
Chevrolet Silverado team recovered from an early-race incident to finish in the
25th position and trimmed the gap to three points in the NASCAR Truck Series
championship standings with one race remaining in the 2008 season.
“I knew Kyle Busch was going
to race me hard but I didn’t know he was that far up on me and I drove it off in
there,” Hornaday said. “He drove on past me and I got loose. I tried to save it
and spun myself out. First of all, I’ve got thank everybody in the NASCAR Truck
Series garage. We had Chevrolet guys, Dodge guys and Ford guys, everybody came
over there to help get our No. 33 VFW Chevrolet Silverado back out of it. That’s
what is so cool about this series, all the people involved. I want to thank them
all from the bottom of my heart. I hate it for our guys that worked really hard
on this VFW Chevrolet.”
Hornaday started the race
from the pole position, his fifth of the season, and was racing side-by-side
with Kyle Busch for the lead on the first lap. As the two raced into turn three,
the rear end of Hornaday’s No. 33 VFW Chevrolet slid out causing him to spin,
making contact with the outside retaining wall. As the No. 33 came back down the
race track, the truck of A.J. Fitzpatrick made contact with Hornaday, causing
more damage to the No. 33 VFW Chevrolet.
The No. 33 VFW Chevrolet
crew, aided by Roush Racing’s No. 6 and No. 99 teams, TRG’s No. 7 and No. 71
teams and Brad Keselowski Racing’s No. 19 team, made hasty repairs to the truck
and Hornaday returned to the track on lap 30, 29 laps down to the leaders in the
32nd position. When the caution came out on laps 64 and 79, Hornaday came down
pit road for the crew to make shock and track-bar adjustments and top off with
fuel.
On lap 88, point’s leader
Johnny Benson was involved in an accident in turn one and was forced behind the
wall for extensive repairs. By the time Benson returned to the track, Hornaday
had already gained several positions and would eventually pass him for 25th
position, where he would finish. With one race remaining in the 2008 season,
Hornaday narrowed the point’s gap to three, the smallest point margin with one
race to go in the Truck Series’ 14-year history.
