Mr.
Goodcents 300
Started:
35th
Finished 24th
Kansas City, MO (September 29, 2001) -
Ron Hornaday and the No. 11
Channellock Chevrolet team started 35th
in the Mr. Goodcents 300 at
KansasSpeedway. Hornaday and the
team were satisfied with performance of
the Channellock Chevrolet and felt
confident that they would be contenders
for Saturday's event.
The Channellock Chevrolet got loose in
turn's one and two of Hornaday's
first qualifying lap. He picked up
over two seconds on his second lap,
giving the
team a 35th starting position for
Saturday's event. He battled an
ill handling,
loose racecar for the first 10 laps of
the race. The caution flag flew for the
first
time on lap 11. This gave the
Channellock crew a chance to bring
Hornaday in
and drop the track bar one round.
Quoting Hornaday: "We struggled in
qualifying and we were not even close to
where we needed to be (Friday)
afternoon. Bob Temple and the guys
made
changes to the setup as the race went on
and the car's handling just
wouldn't come around. We lost a
lap about half way through the race, but
we
still finished inside the top-25.
This was the car we ran in Michigan and
Chicago and we found some ways to make
it better. We've been looking
forward to Charlotte for several weeks
now and we finally get to focus our
attention on the Little Trees 300.

Hornaday
Preparing for Battle with Kansas
Mooresville,
NC (September 25, 2001) - Ron Hornaday
has never raced a car at Kansas, but he
won’t be any further behind the rest
of the competition in the NASCAR Busch
Series. It’s going to be a tough race
for the tough cars, but Hornaday is
confident that his team will find a
comfort zone somewhere on the new race
track.
"There’s
just no other track we can compare to
Kansas, so it could be anyone’s
race," said Hornaday. "It’s
not even fair to compare Kansas to any
other track because the characteristics
are totally unique, it’s just in a
class of its own. I really don’t know
what to expect when we get there because
I’ve never raced on anything like it.
So, we’ll rely on the test date NASCAR
has given us on Thursday to make some
notes of our own."
NASCAR
has scheduled a test date for the Busch
Series on Thursday, September 27th, in
order to prepare themselves for the 300
mile inaugural event which heads up the
double header weekend in Kansas.
Hornaday
is focusing on a good finish or a win to
complete the season for the Channellock
Chevrolet team. The engine problem in
Dover that put the No. 11 out of
contention is now a faded memory as far
as Hornaday is concerned, but he is more
determined than ever to finish out the
season with a win.
"We
lost some spots in the points last week
at Dover, but the points battle is so
close right now we are practically neck
in neck with the two teams in front of
us. I’m shooting for fifth or better
in Saturday’s race, that would be a
great accomplishment for this
Channellock team."
