Fellows and Hornaday test for two days with rookie
contender Burney Lamar
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (December 16, 2005)
-- Burney Lamar and the No. 77 Dollar General team
tested for two days at VIRginia International Raceway to
prepare for the upcoming 2006 Busch Series season.
“I
thought the test went great,” said Lamar. “It was so
helpful to have Fellows and Hornaday there to show me
how to get around a place like that (VIR) in the Busch
car.
“I’ve had some road course experience in the past racing
at Sears Point, but the insight that Ron (Fellows) could
give me will be instrumental heading into the first road
course race this season in Mexico.”
Lamar will compete in his first Busch Series road course
event in Mexico City held at the Autodromo Hermanos
Rodriguez this spring, along with KHI teammate Ron
Fellows in the No. 33 entry.
“For Hornaday to take his day off and go with the team
and I to VIR; helped me out even more. We could sit in
the corners together and he could point out specific
areas to pay attention to while we watched Fellows drive
the 2.25-mile course. Each time I went out I picked up
seconds, not tenths, seconds off my time. By the end of
the day I had dropped over five seconds off my original
time.”
Along with the KHI Busch cars making laps around the
road course, Hornaday wheeled Harvick’s Z06 Corvette to
show Lamar the ropes.
Racing in the 2006 Busch Series, Lamar will be a
Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Year candidate. In preparation
for the upcoming season Lamar has a list of tests
scheduled in the off season including; Sebring Raceway
and the NASCAR mandated Busch Series scheduled test
dates at Daytona International Speedway and Las Vegas
Motor Speedway. Lamar also plans to enter the
season-opening ARCA race in Daytona backed by KHI to get
more superspeedway experience.
Lamar, 24, began his racing career at the age of five
racing go-karts. In 2005 Lamar competed in select Truck,
Busch and Grand National West Series races as a member
of the KHI driver development program. He also competed
full-time in the NASCAR Southwest Touring Series,
finishing fourth in the final standings. |
