Hornaday Texas Preview

Previously in Dover:

Ron Hornaday earned his first career win at the Dover ( Del. ) International Speedway in the 300th race of the NASCAR Truck Series. With this win, Hornaday has extended his career record of Truck Series wins to 31. Hornaday is currently second in the championship point standings, 77 points behind leader Mike Skinner.

Hornaday’s Truck Series Career at Texas:

In eight starts at the Texas Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Truck Series, Ron Hornaday has completed 1185 of 1268 laps, of which he has led 203 laps. Hornaday has also earned one top five and five top 10 finishes at the 1.5-mile racetrack.

Go With What You Know:

The Texas Motor Speedway has very similar characteristics to its sister track in Charlotte (N.C.). So it only makes sense that Ron Hornaday will pilot chassis No. 014, the truck he drove to victory lane at Lowe’s (N.C.) Motor Speedway four races ago.

Crew chief, Rick Ren, is feeling pretty good about his intermediate track program. “We ran second and had a shot of winning in California on a two-mile track,” commented Ren. “If we hadn’t received a speeding ticket (penalty) at the Kansas Speedway, there is no doubt we would have at least run second. We tried a different motor combination in Atlanta , and it wasn’t really what we were looking for -- we probably could have been better.”

The last time Rick Ren went to victory lane at the Texas Motor Speedway was in 2001 in the Truck Series with Travis Kvapil. Ren is looking forward to helping Hornaday achieve his first win at the track.

Q&A with Rick Ren, Crew Chief of the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet:

What makes Texas Motor Speedway so difficult? “It’s just really fast. Texas is a track that everyone knows how to drive, but sometimes your setup, aero dynamic package, tires, etc., don’t let you drive the truck how you need to for the racetrack.”

At this point in the season are you points racing? “It’s too early to be points racing, Ron needs to go to the track and race to win. You can’t points race until it’s time. If you are still in the hunt with five or six races to go, then you can think about points racing. Now, there are certain things you think about every race. You need to try and lead a lap, because that’s five points. If you have a truck that’s good enough to lead the most laps, that’s five more points. Those are things that you think about. Do I want him to sit back and ride around in fifth? No, I want him to race to win.”

Q&A with Ron Hornaday, Driver of the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet:

What are your thoughts heading to the Texas Motor Speedway? “We have had top 10 finishes and led laps at Texas, but have never gone to victory lane. I am confident that with the help of my Camping World Chevrolet team, we can change that.”
