The Winston

If there is one race all season that is tailored to me, it would be this one. I don’t have to worry about conserving tires or saving the car for the end.   I can go out and race hard.  That’s what I like to do.  Saturday night racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.  Count me in.”   –Ron Hornaday, Team Conseco Driver

Team Conseco will use chassis 1411 this weekend in for the Winston Open.  This is the same car that raced in The Winston Open last year, as well as the 600 and the fall race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.   This car was also used this year at Atlanta, Texas and California.

Hornaday has Top-10 Finish in Open

Concord, NC (May 19, 2001) - Ron Hornaday turned a 15th-place starting spot into a top-10 finish in Saturday’s Winston Open all-star event run under the lights at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

The Winston is NASCAR’s version of the All-Star event that takes the most recent winners in the Winston Cup Series, along with the winner of the Winston Open and the No Bull Sprint in a 70-lap shootout.

Hornaday was competing in the Winston Open, in an effort to qualify for The Winston. Hornaday started 15th and was able to move up into the eighth position when the checkered flag flew.

“That was pretty good,” said Hornaday after the race was over. “We needed to see what we had for next weeks 600. We showed we had a good car and I didn’t want to mess it up by racing too hard in a non-point event. I think with a couple of adjustments, we’re going to be in good shape for next week’s Coca-Cola 600.”

FX will air the Coca-Cola 600 live from Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina live on Saturday, May 27, with television coverage starting at 6:00PM E.D.T.
